Reforging

The reforging UI, both with and without an item in it.

Reforging is a feature introduced in the 1.1 update, and can be used to modify most weapons and accessories. Vanity items, armor, and special tools such as the Grappling Hook are unable to be reforged.

Purchasing a reforge from the Goblin Tinkerer's buying interface applies better/worse stats (buffs) to the item being reforged, such as improving damage, increasing movement speed, improving the defense bonus for the item, and so on. However, possible modifications include bad ones that will make the item less desirable, such as making a weapon do less damage or have a slower firing speed. Accessories and Weapons have separate lists of possible buffs/debuffs, and different weapon types also have slightly different lists (range weapons can have improved firing speed, while melee weapons can have improved size which increases hit-range, while spells have reduced mana cost). Reforging an item chooses one buff/debuff from its applicable list at random. Multiple reforges on an item do not stack: Reforging an item will overwrite any existing buff on the item. Items can be reforged infinitely with no penalty. Each buff/debuff has a name and color. The best buffs for weapons will apply 5 different buffs (examples below).

Reforging can increase and decrease the tier of the item by up to 2 tiers, raise the sell price by up to 209%, or decrease it by up to 60%.

Note: Not every item is able to have every kind of prefix[1]. For example, the Magical Harp cannot have the Mythical prefix because the harp itself has no knockback. Mythical boosts knockback so it can't be on the harp. Flails, spears, boomerangs, drills, and chainsaws cannot be reforged for size/knockback, so their best is Godly.

Requirements[]

Legendary Pwnhammer baby!

A Legendary Pwnhammer.

In order to reforge items, there are three different things that need to be obtained:

  • Goblin Tinkerer (NPC after a Goblin Army has been defeated)
  • An amount of money, depending on the item's value. The cost is 1.67 times the sell value of the item.
  • In mobile version, the cost of reforging an item is 5 times its sell value.
    • Note: The Magic Dagger's reforge cost is halved, making it 0.835 times the sale value on PC and console and 2.5 times on mobile.
  • A weapon/accessory to reforge.

The following tables show all the known modifications of each of their class, based on a lower leveled item.

Melee Weapons[]

Flails, spears, boomerangs, drills, and chainsaws cannot be reforged for size/knockback (best is Godly). There is currently a glitch which does not allow you to reforge copper axes above Tier 2 (Green). The other axes (iron, silver, gold, demonite, and the two hamaxes) however can be reforged to be Legendary.

Magical Weapons[]

The Crimson Rod, Nimbus Rod, and Magical Harp cannot be reforged for increased knockback because they have no knockback to begin with.

Some weapons in the Positive Attributes will have negative percentages (e.g. "-17%") for mana cost. This is because lower mana cost is a benefit.

Notes[]

  • It's possible to create a starting character with a prefixed Copper Shortsword, Pickaxe or Axe. In fact, it is possible to create a new character who spawns with Legendary items.
  • The Deadly prefix adds 5 stats to the Musket, improving damage (+9%), speed (+5%), critical strike chance (+2%), velocity (5%), and knockback (5%). This is probably a typo, as usually only the Unreal prefix adds 5 stats to a ranged weapon. However, the stats won't match the scheme of the other Unreal Weapons, so this is disputable.
  • As of PC v1.1, Gungnir is the most expensive weapon to reforge. In the Console Version, Tonbogiri has this distinction.
  • By saving beforehand on the console, one can dashboard if they do not get the reforge they want, thus technically only spending the reforge cost once, which can help a player on a tight budget.
  • A well known and used way to make reforging cheap (PC) is to make a backup of your world and reforge an item of your choice. If you're not satisfied with the outcome, you simply have to shut Terraria down, delete your world, copy the backup into the Worlds file, and try again.
  • In the mobile version of Terraria, there is no label for the reforge slot, making it seem as though it were a glitch slot in the Goblin Tinkerer's interface.
GodlyCopper

A copper shortsword received on starting with the "Godly" title.

Terraria 2013-02-13 17-53-52-55

The "Deadly" Musket - it seems like the prefix is supposed to be "Unreal", as it improves 5 stats.

Electrosphere Launcher

Bugs[]

  • Some modifiers, such as Lucky, have double percentages (e.g. +% %3 melee damage).
  • Occasionally in the console version, reforging an item many times quickly will give the player a modifier with false stats (e.g. 'Godly'( +60% damage, +25% knockback ) ). These supposed stat increases do not actually increase the attributes of your weapons/tools in this way, which can often times trick players into keeping modifiers they do not desire. Exiting and returning to you world will undo these false attributes; they will revert back to their original programming (e.g. 'Godly' (+15% damage, +5% critical strike chance, +15% knockback) ). This glitch may also occur when continuously dash boarding for the best modifiers.
  • On the console version, If you reforge a item that is not in your hotbar at the Goblin Tinkerer and then flick your cursor left really fast while doing so, you can duplicate the weapon. Please note this takes some practice and money, so practice it first on cheap items, then move on to better items to duplicate.
  • Modifiers such as "Deadly" seem to have some sort of bug where the stats are from the unreal prefix (+5 bonus) but the modifier is deadly. This seems to be a common bug on terraria pc.
  • On the Mobile version, the Precise prefix for accessories displays that it gives 1% boost to crit chance when it actually gives 2% and the Lucky prefix displays 2% instead of 4%.
  • on Xbox one there is a chance for a prefix to have an insane amount of knockback. (unconfirmed to work on other prefixes . This may only work on iron Pickaxes.)
