The Demon Scythe has a fast speed, deals 35 damage, and consumes 14 mana. The projectile floats in mid-air when first summoned, and then gradually accelerates in the direction clicked, similar to Demons' and Ocram's spell attack. This spell has a piercing effect that can hit up to 5 enemies.
This weapon is in Tier 3. The Demon Scythe is a drop from all types of Demons, which spawn in the Underworld. It may also drop from them even if they're found elsewhere, assuming it is a bug. You don't have to be afraid to kill Demons over lava as the Demon Scythe will not burn in lava (due to it being tier 3).
The Demon Scythe will vanish after dealing damage 5 times and does not pass through walls.
Also, the Demon Scythe is a good weapon to use against large groups or worm enemies due to the large amount of affected enemies.
It is also good against the Eater of Worlds and Wall of Flesh because it can get through The Hungry and break through many segments.
The Demon Scythe continues to be a good weapon well into Hardmode (where it will likely be replaced by a similar weapon, the Razorblade Typhoon).
