I just started and I don't know how to stop mobs from spawning. I have built walls all around my house and put loads of torches everywhere but they still spawn and it is super annoying. Please help me!!!

I'm doing a class specific play through with my mate on expert mode. I am playing summoner because I never have before and he Is playing ranger. We are on the cultist and I am still using the blade staff... What should I use instead because the blade staff does 1 dmg with the morning star.
